Olive View LGBTQ+ Committee welcomes house of Balmaine for a performance at the health fair

The LGBTQ+ Committee at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center hosted an LGBTQ+ Health and Community Resource Fair in honor of Pride Month this June. We were excited to have an outdoor in-person event to come together and celebrate the diversity of our Olive View-UCLA community, as well as share resources to try to overcome some of the health disparities that have resulted from systemic injustices faced by the LGBTQ+ community. Twelve community organizations attended, providing information about housing, mental health, substance use treatment, safer sex practices, COVID-19 testing, youth services and support for LGBTQ+ families.

This event was part of one of many DHS-wide Pride events, including a panel of trans* and intersex identified individuals and a screening of Intersexion sponsored by Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a talk by Ebony Harper “TRANScending Adversity: A Black Trans Woman’s Story of Survival” sponsored by Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, a panel on gender affirming surgeries sponsored by LA General Medical Center, and a talk by Madeline Deutsch, MD, current president of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health and Medical Director of UCSF Gender Affirming Health Program sponsored by the DHS EDIA Initiative. Teams links for upcoming talks will be distributed by DHS as they become available.

The Olive View-UCLA LGBTQ+ Committee would like to wish everyone a happy pride month. Our committee works to build an inclusive and supportive environment of care for all employees, patients, families, and hospital guests across the gender and sexuality spectrum. We strive to affirm the value and dignity of every individual and dedicate ourselves to creating a healthy community. Our goal is to eliminate the health disparities in the LGBTQ+ community, which include higher rates of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, cancer, substance abuse, smoking, depression, anxiety and suicide.

You can find more information as well as links to educational materials on the Olive View Intranet Olive View LGBTQ Committee (this link is only available to staff) and Internet LGBTQ+ pages available to the public Olive View LGBTQ Health Information or contact the committee at OVMLGBTQ@dhs.lacounty.gov.

Happy Pride!
