Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. In recent years, the significance of Juneteenth has grown, and in 2023, the celebrations reached new heights. In Los Angeles County, communities organized parades, concerts, and cultural events to honor this historic milestone and many cities hosted educational panels and discussions on African American history and the ongoing fight for racial equality.
Officially recognized as a Federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth’s importance and visibility were greatly enhanced in the American society. Facilities across the Department of Health Services also hosted a variety of events and presentations including a health fair with live entertainment at LA General Medical Center, a health walk at Harbor-UCLA and virtual educational presentations at Martin Luther King, Jr. Outpatient Center.
Overall, 2023 Juneteenth events served as a powerful reminder of the progress made and the continued work needed to achieve racial justice and equity.
