In an inspiring article from NPR, Dana Vanderfold, who helps lead the department’s Homelessness Prevention unit, was praised for her work on a first-of-its-kind program that uses Artificial Intelligence to predict who might become homeless and help individuals before they find themselves in dire situations and living on the streets.

The Los Angeles Times published an article in which Dr. Jane Fazio from Olive View-UCLA Medical Center became alarmed by newly reported cases of an incurable disease. Thanks to her awareness, California workplace safety regulators are now drafting emergency rules to protect other workers from the deadly disease.

Finally, an
article in The New York Times, highlighting the innovative work of Dr. Charles Liu at Rancho Los Amigos and his efforts in furthering research in the treatment of traumatic brain injuries.  When a homeless patient presented himself at Rancho Los Amigos, Dr. Liu offered the patient several options including a prosthesis with a window specifically optimized for brain studies. The procedure was successful. The patient was also provided with housing assistance through the Rancho Los Amigos Foundation to assist with his recovery.
