Harbor-UCLA Medical Center recently celebrated its Residents and Fellows by holding a week of celebrations to thank them for their support of our hospital and community. Events included time to connect with one another over food and coffee and enjoying massage therapy sessions and a visit by some pet therapy animals. The Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism (EDIA) Committee also recognized Resident Champions on February 21. Resident Champions recognize residents and fellows who have contributed to Equity Diversity Inclusion and Anti-Racism for the benefit of our patients within research/Quality Improvement (QI), changing procedure/policy/practice, or innovation in education.

The specific criteria called for innovation in these areas:

  1. Research in equity, diversity, inclusion that contribute to knowledge and understanding in the area or improve care for a population,
  2. An initiative or action aiming to adapt or change a procedure, policy, or practice to make them more inclusive or equitable,
  3. Innovation in diversity, equity, and inclusion education and awareness for peers, staff, or the community

This year’s Resident Champions were Dr. Megan Messinger from Pediatrics, Dr. Daisy Cruz from Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Dr. A.J. Green from Surgery.

Harbor-UCLA Medical Center takes great pride in its long history of superior clinical training in a supportive, collegial environment that emphasizes education over the course of 3 years of residency training that allows trainees to serve the diverse population of Los Angeles county, which includes the uninsured, homeless, trauma patients from various communities, and those living at 138% of the federal poverty level or below, which is a household income of approximately $41,400 for a family of 4.
