Reaching health care goals with our patients often requires outside of the box thinking. Our patients come from diverse cultural and socioeconomic circumstances. Patients who experience food insecurity cannot be expected to focus on health care appointments or wellness follow-ups. Oftentimes food insecurity supersedes other priorities. In response to this situation among our patient population, LA Health Services’ FoodRX program, works in partnership with Department of Public Health CalFresh Healthy Living Program to give our patients a stronger footing in their healthcare journey. Between January 2023-June 2023, we conducted 51 food distribution events across our primary care sites. Over 186,120 pounds of food were distributed to 39,583 households. Since the inception of the program in 2021, we have conducted over 392 food distributions, we have served over 290,186 households and distributed over one million pounds of food. These distributions are in addition to providing linkages to CalFresh, SNAP and other long-term food resources. When patients have access to food, they can work toward improving their health.
