On Thursday December 14, 2023, the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, along with the LA Health Services Office of Decedent Affairs, and the LA General Medical Center Chaplains conducted a non-denominational, interfaith burial ceremony to remember and honor LA County’s Unclaimed Dead at the Los Angeles County Cemetery. Local faith leaders presided over the burial of 1,937 decedents in a single communal grave. The event offered a compassionate and reverent opportunity to pay respects to individuals who passed away in 2020, amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Ceremony of the Unclaimed Dead was open to the public, with attendance limited to 75 individuals to preserve the sanctity of the burial grounds. The ceremony was also Live Streamed on Facebook, which enabled the broader community to participate remotely and pay their respects to the unclaimed deceased individuals being honored.
