During the month of April, we express our deepest gratitude to the outstanding Armenian members of our workforce. Your contributions are invaluable to our interdisciplinary teams, to deliver compassionate care to our patients and contribute to the overall wellbeing of our LA Health Services community. Your dedication to LA Health Services is much appreciated. Thank you for your exceptional efforts and unwavering commitment.

Throughout history, Armenian professionals have left an indelible mark on medicine enriching the lives of those around them. Here are three examples of notable advancements by Armenian individuals:

  • Raymond Vahan Damadian: Inventor of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine. He conducted the first-ever full-body scan in 1977.
  • Albert Zaven Kapikian: Developed the first rotavirus vaccine, and dedicated decades to increasing its global accessibility, saving countless lives in developing countries.
  • Marilyn Koobatian Hamilton: Fundamental collaborator in the invention of the lightweight and adjustable “Quickie Wheelchair” used by para-athletes in wheelchair sports.

The Glendale Library, Arts & Culture has an informative list of books and reference materials in honor of Armenian Heritage month. Take a moment to learn more about the incredible Armenian inventors, doctors, and professionals who have thrived in the face of adversity to accomplish remarkable achievements.
