Arab American Heritage Month

During Arab American Heritage Month, we celebrate the contributions of Arab Americans to healthcare in the United States. From the doctors pioneering cutting-edge treatments to the nurses providing compassionate care at the bedside.

Arab Americans have left an indelible mark on healthcare, literature, science and as part of the rich tapestry of our communities.

Here are a few notable examples of individuals who made important contributions to the fields of medicine and science:

  • Hunein Maassab, PhD: Professor and scientist who invented FluMist, an influenza vaccine in the form of a nasal spray.
  • Michael DeBakey, MD: Considered the father of modern cardiovascular surgery. He was a pioneer in the development of an artificial heart.
  • Huda Zoghbi, MD: Neurogeneticist who specializes in brain disorders. Her work helped provide new ways of thinking about Rett syndrome and spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 and other intellectual disabilities, which has led to better treatments.

During Arab American Heritage Month, let’s take a moment to acknowledge the vital role that Arab Americans play in shaping the future of healthcare. This is an excellent opportunity to celebrate and honor the diverse cultures that make our LA Health Services community vibrant and resilient.
