Back in July 2022, the Los Angeles County held its grand opening of the LA General Medical Center Restorative Care Village (RCV). This marked the completion of Phase 1 of LAC’s plans for a more integrated care environment that aims to help individuals recover from mental and medical health conditions. According to LAC Supervisor Hilda L. Solis, “This is an opportunity for the County to create the country’s first mental health and wellbeing campus dedicated to caring for our most vulnerable populations.” One of the major goals of the project is provide access to holistic care for the homeless and disenfranchised community of Los Angeles County.

The overall aim of the RCV is to provide Los Angeles County residents with a full continuum of care in a setting that integrates a community setting. The RCV plans to feature 96 beds for patients who are transitioning out of inpatient care settings, with an additional 64 beds dedicated to a Residential Treatment Program that will provide a short-term alternative to hospitalization for mental health needs. Because of the interrelated nature of poverty, unemployment, homelessness, and overall health, the Restorative Care Village plans to provide a wide variety of services that will complement the primary medical services of LA General Medical Center. The RCV will provide Los Angeles County residents with a full continuum of care in a setting that integrates a community setting. Services include recuperative care, a psychiatric emergency room, crisis residential housing, permanent supportive housing, and a network of other social services.

The RCV design provided by CannonDesign Builders features a highly modular design featuring highly prefabricated units provided by ModularDesign+ that, taken together, highlights an attractive design that can be built with high quality and reduced costs compared to other methods. The economical and modular construction doctrine for the RCV highlights the feasibility of such a project for other healthcare networks interested in undertaking similar projects.
