Where to Get Imaging Studies Done

Purpose

We advance clinically grounded imaging research focused on underserved populations, translating innovation into real-world impact through collaboration, rigor, and mentorship—aligned with the missions of DHS Radiology and Los Angeles General Medical Center.

Our research turns bedside challenges into solutions that improve access, quality, and outcomes. Using real-world data, imaging biobanks, and pragmatic trials, we study what works in everyday practice. Key areas include equity-centered outcomes, AI/radiomics, workflow optimization, and imaging innovation across ultrasound, CT, MRI, and interventional radiology. Guided by implementation science, we rapidly translate discoveries into scalable, affordable care.

This site serves as a hub for our studies, publications, and resources, including imaging analytics, data governance, and biostatistics cores; mentorship and trainee tracks; and cross-disciplinary collaborations. It also provides IRB guidance, shared tools, and updates on Grand Rounds, pilot funding, and partnership opportunities.

Vinay Duddalwar Picture Vice Chair, Research

Overview

Vinay A. Duddalwar, MD, FRCR, is the Vice Chair for Research at LA General Radiology. He holds research appointments as a Professor of Research Radiology and Urology at the USC Keck School of Medicine and as a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. His clinical practice, teaching, and research focus on oncologic imaging, with a primary emphasis on abdominal and genitourinary oncology.

Dr. Duddalwar’s work centers on oncologic imaging—particularly abdominal and genitourinary cancers—and integrates radiomics, contrast-enhanced ultrasound, and multiomic analysis. His federally and industry-funded lab bridges imaging, AI, and genomics to develop explainable decision-support tools. The lab emphasizes mentorship, collaboration, and translational research in radiogenomics, angiogenesis, molecular imaging, and treatment response.

Research Themes

Our research is grounded in the themes of collaboration, both interdisciplinary and interinstitutional.

  • Clinical research: Multiple faculty colleagues are involved both in investigator-initiated and multisite research
  • AI: Our faculty are involved in multiple projects exploring the use and development of AI tools in radiology
  • Education: We collaborate with our team of residency Program directors, education council, and chief residents to provide a range of research opportunities for residents. Additionally, multiple medical students also work with our faculty on research.

Grand Rounds

Radiology Grand Rounds at LA General provide a unified forum for advancing imaging science, safety, and value-based care through expert lectures and case discussions. The series bridges subspecialties, fosters mentorship and scholarship, integrates AI and data-driven quality metrics, and fulfills ACGME/MOC educational goals.
