Become a Volunteer and Make a Difference
Public hospitals are special places where miracles happen every day. Volunteers help make those miracles happen by lending a hand, sharing a smile, reading a book to a child, and offering help to patients, staff, and visitors. DHS is proud of the hundreds of volunteers who donate time to assist as greeters, messengers, and overall “care ambassadors.”
Whether you’re a retiree or a high school or college student thinking about a career in the health profession, we are always looking for new volunteers who are enthusiastic and committed. If you want to make a difference and enjoy helping others, contact the Volunteer Services office at one of our DHS hospitals listed below and they can help find the right place for you based on your schedule and interests.
You must meet certain requirements to become a hospital volunteer. Volunteers must complete an application and background check, and meet other requirements to ensure the safety of our patients and a rewarding experience for our volunteers. Below is a listing of some of those requirements. Check with the Volunteer Office for updated information and a schedule of upcoming orientation sessions.
- Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
- Volunteers must commit to six months of volunteering usually done in one or two 4 hour shifts per week.
- Complete background check and Influenza vaccination (during flu season).
- Volunteers must abide by all patient confidentiality guidelines, customer service expectations, and hospital policies.
