Naloxone Distribution

Naloxone Distribution

The Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution (OEND) program is part of a countywide effort to reduce the number of overdose deaths. The program prevents overdoses in high-risk communities and equips them with the life-saving medication naloxone. Naloxone, or Narcan, is a medication that reverses an opioid overdose.

In addition to handing out naloxone, street-based outreach teams educate people and connect them to healthcare, housing, substance use treatment, and other services to help them build healthier lives.

The OEND program focuses on helping people who are unhoused, engage in sex work, or were recently incarcerated, since data show that they are more likely to experience a drug overdose. Teams also conduct training for staff at housing sites, hospitals, clinics, and other locations.

Naloxone is also distributed in other ways, including through vending machines and kiosks at the LA County jails, clinics, and hospitals.
