Los Angeles County has broken ground on a $1.7 billion project to expand and replace Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, marking a significant step forward in enhancing healthcare access and equity in South Los Angeles County.
Los Angeles County Second District Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell joined County CEO Fesia Davenport and officials from LA County Departments of Health Services, Mental Health, and Public Works on Wednesday, Feb. 28 to mark the start of construction at the Harbor-UCLA Campus.
The Harbor-UCLA Replacement Program initiative includes the construction of a new nine-story hospital and five additional buildings on the existing medical center’s campus, aimed at providing care for underserved communities and bolstering the capabilities of the county’s only Level I trauma center.
The project, the county’s largest-ever capital improvement in healthcare, includes constructing six new buildings, featuring a nine-story hospital that replaces the facility made famous by the 1970s TV series “Emergency!” Despite the extensive construction, the old medical center will remain operational, with completion targeted for 2027.
