Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO) – Managed Care

HMO plans require their members to choose a primary care physician (PCP).  Before you can see a specialist at LA County DHS, you will need to obtain an authorization from your PCP or check with your HMO member services.

How much does it cost?

  • Monthly premiums
  • HMO plans typically enable members to have lower out-of-pocket healthcare costs
  • Deductibles may not be required before coverage starts and co-payments will likely be minimal
  • No coverage for services given by out-of-network doctors or for services given without a proper referral from your PCP

What is required?

  • As a member of an HMO, you will be required to choose a (PCP)
  • Your PCP will take care of most of your healthcare needs
  • Before you can see a specialist, you will need to obtain an authorization from your PCP

What is covered?

  • HMO plans offer a wide range of healthcare services through a network of doctors who agree to provide services to members
  • With an HMO you will have coverage for a full range of preventive healthcare services than you would through another type of plan
