About Medical Legal Community Partnership

Legal

Medical Legal Community Partnership-Los Angeles is a collaboration between the department and four local non-profit legal services organizations. The program serves low-income residents in Los Angeles County, helping patients with legal problems that affect their health.

The legal team works closely with the whole care team at the clinic. They have helped eliminate patients’ debt, restored their Medi-Cal benefits and defended evictions. The lawyers also train clinic staff on topics such as immigration and public benefits.

The partner organizations are:

Legal

Free legal services are available to all patients through the Medical Legal Community Partnership-Los Angeles. The legal team provides help over the phone or at a health clinic. The legal team helps with many types of issues, including:

  • Access to health coverage including Medi-Cal,
  • Child support or custody,
  • Evictions and poor housing conditions,
  • Immigration and legal status,
  • Income and employment,
  • Personal and family safety,
  • Public benefits such as food, SSI and cash aid, and
  • Special education.

The legal team does not help with medical malpractice, criminal cases, or personal injury lawsuits.

Legal

Legal services are free for Health Services patients and household members. You can seek help for a specific legal issue or you can get a “legal check-up”. Because each case is different, the kind of help may be different from patient to patient.

To talk to a lawyer, you can:

  • Ask your doctor, nurse, a social worker, or any other clinic staff to refer you to the medical legal partners,
  • Email legalhelp@dhs.lacounty.gov
  • Call (818) 485-0575

Be ready to give your first and last name, phone number, medical record number and preferred language.

If you don’t know your clinic or you want to be a Health Services patient, call (844) 804-0055 or click here.

Legal

If the Medical Legal Community Partner lawyers cannot help you, they may refer you to another organization that can.

Since 1973, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank has worked to mobilize resources in the community to alleviate hunger. The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank’s mission is to mobilize resources to fight hunger in our community. There are federal, state and local programs that we access in order to accomplish this goal. The Food Bank regularly communicates with our representatives to ensure that they understand the problem of hunger in their respective districts, know what we do, and understand how we can partner to address hunger in Los Angeles. We also belong to a variety of coalitions that work towards these goals. Visit us for locations near you.

Mom’s Meals has meal options and programs that serve a wide range of health and nutritional needs. In many cases, meals may be covered under a health plan or other type of benefit. Visit our website for more information.

Meals on Wheels focuses on caring for individuals whose diminished mobility makes it hard to shop for food, prepare meals or socialize with others. Generally programs serve adults 60 and over, although age requirements can vary by program and areas served. People who are mobile enough to join others for meals in a group setting where seniors congregate, like senior centers and cafes, are encouraged to do so; while others less mobile may qualify for home delivery. At the core of the Meals on Wheels service is a nutritious meal, companionship and a watchful eye on the health and safety of our seniors. Visit our website to find a Meals on Wheels provider near you.
