Los Angeles Development and Rapid Operationalization of Prehospital Blood
Our mission is to save lives in Los Angeles by providing emergent blood transfusions to people with severe bleeding from injuries, childbirth, and other causes—before they reach the hospital. Through strategic partnerships and a robust community-driven blood donor network, LA-DROP aims to reduce preventable deaths and strengthening Los Angeles’ emergency medical response system with innovative prehospital care.
The Los Angeles Development and Rapid Operationalization of Prehospital Blood (LA-DROP) pilot program is a partnership between the LA County Fire Department, City of Compton Fire Department, LA County EMS Agency, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and San Diego Blood Bank committed to establishing the first safe and sustainable prehospital blood program in LA County.
Donor Program Mission: To establish a reliable community-driven whole blood donor program that ensures a steady supply of lifesaving blood for prehospital transfusions, directly supporting the LA-DROP program in its mission to enhance patient survival in critical emergencies.

The California Development and Rapid Operationalization of Prehospital Blood (CAL-DROP) is a statewide coalition of Local EMS Agencies (LEMSAs), Fire Departments, Hospitals, and Blood Banks committed to establishing the first safe and sustainable ground EMS blood programs in the state. Our mission is to enhance emergency medical care by ensuring that life-saving blood is available to trauma patients, individuals experiencing postpartum hemorrhage, and others suffering from critical blood loss—before they reach the hospital. Through innovative partnerships, collaborative data collection, and building a resilient blood donor network, CAL-DROP is revolutionizing prehospital care across California.

The Prehospital Blood Transfusion Initiative Coalition is a nationwide collaboration dedicated to expanding access to prehospital blood transfusions. Through policy advocacy, reimbursement reform, and standardized scope-of-practice guidelines, the coalition supports both ground and air EMS providers in delivering critical, lifesaving care. Additionally, it works to strengthen national preparedness for trauma and mass casualty incidents while advancing education and best practices for EMS professionals. By fostering innovation and collaboration, the coalition strives to ensure that every patient, regardless of location, has timely access to essential blood transfusions when they need them most.
