Welcome to the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine

A fully ACGME approved four-year comprehensive, combined training core program in Anatomic and Clinical pathology, or three year training in Anatomic only, are available. The program is ACGME-approved for a total of 16 positions. The training program accepts candidates who have had one year or more of training in a clinical specialty, medical research, transitional year internship, or new medical school graduates. The combined program features anatomic and clinical rotations integrated in every year. The core curriculum anatomic pathology rotations include autopsy pathology, surgical pathology, forensic pathology, exfoliative and aspiration cytology, neuropathology, molecular biology and diagnostic electron microscopy. The clinical pathology rotations are taken in clinical biochemistry and toxicology, hematopathology, HLA typing and cytogenetics, microbiology, immunopathology, and blood banking laboratories.

Management and administration of laboratories is taught by integration into each rotation. In either program, three months of elective rotations are offered in the third and fourth year to all trainees who are in compliance with basic curriculum requirements. The trainees will also contribute to the interdepartmental residency teaching programs of the Pathology Department. AP microscopic teaching conferences are conducted 3 or 4 days per week, and autopsy review conference once weekly for all residents. Senior residents will have the opportunity to serve as Chief Residents and Junior Attendings.

SELECTION PROCESS

Our program receives a large number of application inquiries, so we will not be able to interview all of the qualified individuals.

We look forward to reviewing your application. We will accept applications until December 1, 2024 for a residency position beginning on July 1, 2025. Virtual Interviews of applicants will be scheduled starting in October 2024 through January 2025. Thank you again for your interest in our residency program.

Acceptable Visa Types:

Harbor-UCLA Medical Center only accepts J1 visas sponsored by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates-Exchange Sponsorship Program (ECFMG). No other visa types are accepted, no exceptions.
