[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”9189″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]The Center for Applied Rehabilitation Te<\/span>chnology (CART) opened in 1989\u00a0<\/span>to help children and adults with disabilities lead more independent lives through the use of assistive technology<\/span>\u00a0solutions<\/span>.\u202fAssist<\/span>ive technology\u00a0<\/span>enables individuals with disabilities to participate more fully\u00a0<\/span>in everyday activities at home,\u00a0<\/span>school<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>work<\/span>, and in the community<\/span>. An interdisciplinary team\u00a0<\/span>of experts\u00a0<\/span>consisting of occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech pathology and a\u00a0<\/span>rehabilitation engineer<\/span>\u00a0are available to address one or more of the following technology areas: \u202fseating and mobility, augmentative and alternative communication,\u00a0<\/span>environmental control<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>access to computers and\/or mobile devices,<\/span>\u00a0adaptive gaming,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>low vision assistive technology\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0worksite<\/span>\/ergonomic<\/span>\u00a0evaluations.\u202f<\/span>The experienced CART\u00a0<\/span>consultants\u00a0<\/span>work together with clients and caregivers to ensure that\u00a0<\/span>individuals have the opportunity to test different solutions and find optimal and seamless\u00a0<\/span>methods\u00a0<\/span>to meet their individual goals.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Clients Served:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Clients of any age who have a physical disability are eligible for services (<\/span>CART serves individuals experiencing<\/span>\u00a0cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury,<\/span>\u00a0stroke, and<\/span>\u00a0progressive neuromuscular diseases<\/span>\u00a0such as ALS, among other diagnoses.<\/span>) Clients may have multiple and\/or severe disabilities and may\u00a0<\/span>benefit from<\/span>\u00a0an integrated approach to meet one or multiple technology needs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Equipment Loan\u00a0Program<\/strong>:<\/strong>\u00a0 A\u00a0<\/span>loan\u00a0<\/span>library of assistive technologies<\/span>\u00a0is available through CART<\/span>.\u00a0 This program provides individuals<\/span>\u00a0with opportunities<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>borrow\u00a0<\/span>equipment<\/span>\u00a0for short term\u00a0<\/span>use in the home and community<\/span>\u00a0to better determine what will work best for them<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Technology\u00a0Solutions at\u00a0CART<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Seating and Mobility<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>Optimal\u00a0<\/span>positioning\u00a0<\/span>supports better\u00a0<\/span>function and is often\u00a0<\/span>the first step\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0determining access to other\u00a0<\/span>technologies<\/span>\u00a0such as power mobility controls, communication devices, computers<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and mobile devices<\/span>. A variety of cushions, posture positioning systems, wheelchairs, and other mobility devices are\u00a0<\/span>evaluated to provide the most stable position.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>Individuals with severe speech impairments often\u00a0<\/span>benefit from the use AAC approaches<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The team at CART promotes successful communication by finding the best match between individual need and available system functionality.\u00a0 Individuals may access devices in a range of ways from pointing with their hands, to using switches, head mouse, or eye gaze.\u00a0 Many types of systems are available ranging from communication booklets containing pictures to applications, tablets and devices generating speech output.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Access to Computer and Mobile Devices<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Software and hardware adaptations are available to assist individuals in accessing and using computers and mobile devices. Adaptations may include wheelchair or desktop phone or tablet mounts, modified keyboards, switch access, mouse emulators, head or eye tra<\/span>cking, and voice recognition.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Worksite Evaluations<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>Individual concerns<\/span>\u00a0related to performing current or potential\u00a0<\/span>work activities\u00a0<\/span>are evaluated. Environmental factors such as\u00a0<\/span>accessibility and workspace configuration are considered<\/span>, along with ergonomic principles and equipment.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Environmental Control<\/span><\/b>:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>Technologies such as smart speakers and mobile devices\u00a0<\/span>are used to control many devices including\u00a0<\/span>operating<\/span>\u00a0lights, TV, thermostats, sound syst<\/span>ems for playing music and news,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>making\u00a0<\/span>phone calls, and other<\/span>\u00a0functions<\/span>.\u00a0 Systems are accessed through voice or other modalities.\u00a0 The Model Home allows for demonstration of a wide range of devices and universal design principles to promote increased independence in the home and office.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Low Vision Assistive Devices:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Low vision refers to vision loss that\u00a0<\/span>cannot<\/span>\u00a0be corrected by eye glasses or medical treatment. Use of low vision assistive aids, such as magnifiers, lighting, and digital aids, can help individuals continue to independently participate in\u00a0<\/span>important\u00a0<\/span>daily activities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In the Model Home individuals can experience using this assistive equipment while doing daily tasks in a home environment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Model Home:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Our\u00a0<\/span>Model H<\/span>ome showcases\u00a0<\/span>a wide range of\u00a0<\/span>assistive t<\/span>echnology solutions<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Commercially available products paired with universal design principles are used to create an accessible kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living area,\u00a0<\/span>using<\/span>\u00a0\u201csmart\u201d technology and common aids to daily living.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adaptive Gaming:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Individuals who have difficulty using standard controls on gaming consoles, mobile devices, and computers have options which will allow them to have access to these platforms. Adaptations range from commercially available solutions to customized tools via 3d printing<\/span>\u00a0through CART\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>partner<\/span>\u00a0program the Rancho Emerging Tech Lab.\u00a0 www.ranchoemergingtechlab.org<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
