- Housing For Health (HFH) 101 & Whatever it Takes: This is a training that walks Intensive Case Managers (ICMs) through the the plethora of programs and resources at Housing for Health (HFH). Whatever It Takes is lecture style and an interactive training that goes over HFH’s philosophy of Intensive Case Management Services (ICMS). We recommend these training’s for all new ICMs and anyone that needs a refresher in HFH programs and philosophy.
- Documentation Training: The training will teach front-line staff how to improve documentation skills and practices on various modes of case management documentation (i.e. case notes, individual service plans, assessments, authorizations to release information etc.) The training is mandatory for new staff working on the Health Services contract and also suggested for any HFH contracted staff that is interested in improving their documentation skills in this area. The training is presented by Tootsa Farrington and Sareena Kanji.
- Understanding Client Mental Health: This training gives providers an in-depth understanding and knowledge of mental illnesses and conditions present in the homeless population. This group is mostly lecture style with participatory group work. The training is facilitated by Matt Harwood, LCSW.
- Harm Reduction 101: The training covers the fundamental tenets of the harm reduction model. This training is for ICMS providers who are new to the harm reduction philosophy and want to understand how it relates to housing first. The training is facilitated by Dr. Joey Aguilar Psy.D.
- Ethics and Boundaries: The training teaches direct social services providers the following: How to develop boundaries and be conscientious of professional ethics; the importance of having strong boundaries/ethics in work that requires the provider to do emotional work like case management, counseling and outreach; and how to provide a whatever it takes approach while simultaneously maintaining a healthy working relationship with the client.
- Accompaniment and Transitions of Care: This training takes a deep dive into the concepts of accompaniment, and how to practice it in everyday case management work. This course format is a combination of lecture, discussion, and small group work. The training is presented by HFH Medical Director, Dr. Heidi Behforouz.
- Motivational Interviewing: This is an interactive course designed for staff working in a social service setting that is interested in learning this evidence-based communication technique. This is an interactive intro course in Motivational Interviewing (MI) and focuses on helping clients go from ambivalence to change. The training will cover all the fundamental principles of MI. This training is led by Matt Harwood, LCSW.
- Talking about Client Sexuality: This training gives providers an understanding of how to talk with clients openly about a very important part of life, sexuality. The training gives you the tools to talk about this subject without shame. This group is mostly lecture style with participatory group work. The training is facilitated by Matt Harwood, LCSW.
- The Many Faces of Trauma: This training gives a perspective on the many faces of trauma providers can face when working with a highly vulnerable population. The training is led by Greg Carlsson, LMFT.
- Working with Challenging Client Cases: This training is designed to assist staff with handling challenging clients that are often acting out and have difficult situations. The following topics are covered: Identifying difficult client behaviors, risk factors which can cause or increase acting out, strategies to handle acting out behaviors, identification and handling of potentially unsafe or dangerous situations, how to deal with clients expressing suicidal thoughts and how to set and enforce effective boundaries. This training is facilitated by Matt Harwood, LCSW.
- Federal Subsidy Application Clinic: This clinic is focused on how to navigate the federal subsidy application process and documentation. Specific federal subsidy applications that will be reviewed are LACDA and HACLA. This a great forum for case managers who want to learn how to more efficiently and effectively tackle these types applications and their requirements. This clinic will be conducted by Alsalon Williams.
- ICMS Process/ Support Group: This is a support group to help case management staff process some of the more challenging experiences and aspects of the case management work. This group happens every 2nd Tuesday of the month and you will receive an invite for each of the group events to register. This group is facilitated by Greg Carlsson, LMFT.
- Intimate Partner Violence: This training is designed to assist participants in gaining knowledge and learning about the expanded definition of Domestic Violence (Intimate Partner Violence), the prevalence of Intimate Partner Violence, traits of perpetrators and victims, impact on victims and society, impact on children, cultural factors, basic assessment, and treatment methods. Various methods will be used to conduct the course including Interactive Lecture/Discussion, PowerPoint Presentations, Videos, interactive activities, and role play examples. This training is facilitated by Matt Harwood, LCSW.
- Hoarding Disorder Work Group: The purpose of this group is to find ways to work with challenging hoarding cases. This group aims to be practical, problem solving and solution focused. The trainer provides practical methods and tips on how to work with clients to contain and manage hoarding behaviors. This group is a discussion format. The group is facilitated by Dr. Danielle Schlichter, Psy.D. Clinical Psychologist.
- Motivational Interviewing 102: This session is a deeper dive into motivational interviewing 101. The format is workgroups which are intended to build upon prior introduction to MI training. These groups give ICMS providers an opportunity to role-play exercises with the goal of improving and maintaining MI skills. This group meets monthly and is an interactive style group. The group is facilitated by Matt Harwood, LCSW.
