The LGBTQ+ Committee at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center (Olive View) hosted an LGBTQ+ Health and Community Resource Fair in honor of Pride month this June. We were excited to have an outdoor in-person event to come together and celebrate the diversity of our Olive View community, as well as share resources to try to overcome some of the health disparities that have resulted from systemic injustices faced by the LGBTQ+ community.

Because of our collaborations, the event was a huge success. Approximately 200 people attended the event. Ten organizations participated and provided information about STI testing and prevention, COVID vaccines, Just Culture and distributed at-home HIV test kits. Local LGBTQ+ centers such as Bienestar, Somos Familia Valle, Translatin@ Coalition, and PFLAG shared resources with everyone in attendance. Gift cards as well as a pair of Dodger tickets were donated to the committee by generous community members for an opportunity drawing.

The Olive View-UCLA LGBTQ+ Committee would like to wish everyone a happy pride month. Our committee works to build an inclusive and supportive environment of care for all employees, patients, families, and hospital guests across the gender and sexuality spectrum. We strive to affirm the value and dignity of every individual and dedicate ourselves to creating a healthy community. The committee develops educational materials, provides trainings, improves policies and procedures, holds events such as health fairs and panel discussions, partners with outside organizations, and attends community events. Our goal is to eliminate the health disparities in the LGBTQ+ community, which include higher rates of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, cancer, substance abuse, smoking, depression, anxiety and suicide.
