MHLA Community Partner Connection Newsletter

Community Partners,

Just when we thought we’d turned the corner on the pandemic, we are now seeing numbers of cases and hospitalizations increasing again. Nearly all hospitalizations at our LA County hospitals are among individuals who are not fully vaccinated. Please let us know what more we can do together to get MHLA participants vaccinated. See below for a few updates on MHLA:

  • The MHLA Eligibility Review Unit staff recently sent out their latest eligibility audit findings and will be holding one-on-one conversations with your leads to discuss them. Our staff will share tips on ensuring applications are taken and processed correctly and they will explain why some of MHLA applications were denied. Often, it is because of missing or incomplete documents.
  • The MHLA Annual Audits (medical and dental record reviews and dental and facility site reviews) will begin in early September. The audits will continue remotely for FY 2021-22. Pre-site audits, however, will be conducted in person. The tools changed just slightly – we will post them soon.
  • Having talked to some of you over the past few weeks, we understand you are working hard to bring patients (especially those who have delayed care) back into the clinics for check-ups and screenings. We will be rolling out a small incentive program to support this work.
  • We are exploring some possible adjustments to the MHLA mental health prevention program. DMH, MHLA and CCALAC are forming a new behavioral health workgroup to discuss. In the meantime, please continue screening participants and providing prevention services to MHLA participants. See the MHLA website for the curriculums on stress management, trauma-informed care and grief and loss. Remember to complete the brief training before providing services. There is a lot of need among the communities and these services can help!
  • We are grateful for the State’s decision to offer full-scope Medi-Cal to individuals 50 years and older, regardless of immigration status. The current numbers show that about 55,000 MHLA participants will qualify. That makes up nearly one-quarter of the entire newly eligible population statewide. We look forward to bringing together some MHLA clinic leaders to discuss the transition plans.

Please send us news about your clinics! Our digital newsletter allows for more photos and articles, so we really want to highlight the work you are doing.

Thank you very much and stay safe! — Anna Gorman, Director of Community Partnerships
