Saturday, October 29, 2022 – The Rancho Research Institute hosted the 11th biennial Many Faces of Dementia Conference in partnership with USC-Rancho California Alzheimer’s Disease Center, the Rancho Geriatric Neurobehavior & Alzheimer’s Center, the USC Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and Alzheimer’s Los Angeles.

The Many Faces of Dementia conference highlights advances in clinical care and research on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The conference was open to all health and social service professions engaged in care of people with dementia and their families.

The conference focused on improving early detection. Speakers from across the state shared their insight and expertise on programs and research with a focus on advancements in dementia detection. Dr. Ellen Wong opened the day with her presentation on Risk Factors for Cognitive Decline highlighting that there are twelve modifiable risk factors that account for 40% of worldwide dementias and the opportunity they present to reduce the risk of dementia development. Dr. Soo Borson presented on the management of dementia as a chronic condition as well as the importance of early detection which can ensure patients are not diagnosed during crisis care.

Participants learned about the Assessment of Cognitive Complaints Toolkit – Alzheimer’s Disease (ACCT-AD) developed by the California Alzheimer’s Disease Centers (CADCs). Dr. Loren I. Alving and Dr. Anna Chodos shared about the new Dementia Care Aware (DCA) program advocating for cognitive health screening in the primary care setting. The complexities of dementia symptoms and diagnosis as well as real-world applications of the toolkit were discussed during panel conversations and Dr. Soeren Mattke helped to navigate the best tools to help with early detection of cognitive impairment.

The day was a robust learning opportunity for participants and welcomed guests back to an in-person event which supported critical networking opportunities for all. As in years past, CME or CEU credits were available for interested and eligible participants.

The Many Faces of Dementia Conference highlighted the dedication of so many leaders in the dementia care arena to improve early detection and ultimately improve care for patients throughout California.
