Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Launches Lifeguard Ready Training Program 1024 683 Health Services Los Angeles County

The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is launching an expanded youth Lifeguard Ready Training (LRT) program and keeping nine seasonal pools open exclusively from October 2022 to June 2023 to serve as youth lifeguard training facilities. DPR is on a mission to recruit, train and provide greater access to 500+ youth ages 16 to 24 to become LA County Pool Lifeguards. They are enrolling youth with all swimming abilities for the LRT program, including little or no swimming experience. No youth will be turned away from the LRT program. They are committed to offering ALL youth a lifeguard candidate position upon successful completion of the LRT program and passing the qualifying swimming test.

This program is FREE! In addition, they are providing youth coach/mentors for high-touch support, free swim passes to the pools for practice, Metro bus passes for transportation and all that youth need to participate in LRT (swimming suits, towels, goggles, etc.).

The starting salary for LA County Pool Lifeguards is $19.27 an hour and benefits.

DPR has wonderful success stories from their pilot LRT program last year and want to expand impact by ensuring that the LRT program reaches youth of promise in vulnerable communities.

Attached are fliers to help spread the word. Please distribute this information widely. Currently DPR lifeguards are tabling at high schools and community colleges to recruit.
