The OVMC Recreation Therapy Department
LA Health Services prioritizes patient health and wellbeing. There are interesting programs and opportunities for patients to heal beyond traditional healthcare. Olive View-UCLA Medical Center’s Recreation Therapy Department recently hosted an inspiring art exhibit called “Healing Through Art,” showcasing remarkable artwork created by their mental health patients. This event was not just a display of artistic talent but a profound testament to the healing power of art. Each piece of art represented a personal journey, reflecting the emotions, struggles and triumphs of its creator. Through painting, drawing, sculpting and other forms of artistic expression, these patients were able to communicate their feelings in a safe and supportive environment.
The art exhibit served multiple purposes. For the patients, it became an alternative pathway for expressing emotions, thoughts and experiences that may be difficult to articulate. By engaging in the creative process, the patients were able to explore their inner worlds, confront unresolved issues, and achieve a sense of catharsis and healing. For those who attended the exhibit, it provided a window into the patients’ inner lives. It helped demystify mental illness and fostered empathy and understanding. Observing the artwork and reading the accompanying stories allowed viewers to connect with the patients on a human level, recognizing their resilience and strength. This experience was a crucial step in reducing stigma and promoting a more inclusive and supportive environment.
We are extremely grateful to our Recreation Therapy Department for hosting and allowing us to take a glimpse into the profound world of art therapy. This exhibit demonstrated that art therapy is not merely about creating art, it’s about creating a space for healing and transformation.
