Applying for a Visiting Sub-internship Rotation in Orthopaedic Surgery

To perform a visiting rotation at Harbor-UCLA Orthopaedics, interested 4th year medical students must apply through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) site:

On VSLO, we are listed under “UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine” in VSLO, but for the “elective location” you have to select “Harbor”. Our elective course number is “OS-OS450.03”. You can also find our clerkship by filtering by city (Torrance).

Additional Information:

  • Clerkships are 3 weeks long. We typically have 1- 4 students at a time.
  • Clerkship rotation dates are preset by UCLA DGSOM.
  • Most clerkships occur between May-December.
  • Harbor is one of UCLA DGSOM’s sites, so UCLA medical students get first choice when choosing clerkship dates.
  • Once UCLA students choose their clerkships, the remaining dates are available for other medical students throughout the U.S.
  • We can only accept international students that are on the pre-approved list provided by UCLA. This usually requires the student’s medical school to already have an agreement with UCLA as one of their sites.

Applying to Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Program

Residents are selected for appointment at the PGY1 level through the National Resident Matching Program. Resident applications are submitted through the ERAS Program. Necessary information required of all applicants for consideration in the selection process include United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) scores, Dean’s letter and three letters of recommendation.

Selection of an applicant is based on their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. Interviews typically take place the first weekend of January (Friday/Saturday).

We encourage applicants to apply by November 1st.
